Characters in the plot
The narrator and Luo are best friends that are being re-educated in a small village during the time period that China was communist under Mao Zedong. The villagers do not try to hard to re-educate them, just make them do work. Though the headman does try to blackmail them. They meet the Little Seamstress, daughter of the Tailor, who is beautiful and has many admirers like the cripple and his gang. They become good friends with her and she became Luo's girlfriend. They knew Four-Eyes even though he was being re-educated in a different village. He had illegal books, such as Balzac. He agreed to give them books if they helped him so they came up with a scheme that involved tricking an old miller. When Four-Eyes's mother comes to get him the two boys steal the books. Later on the narrator has to trade some books to get help from a doctor that he found thanks to a dying preacher.
